Hi, my name is Dr. Norma Reyes and am a Career & Life Coach. I help women overcome their fears, so they can have a career & life they love. I believe everyone has uncovered talents and leadership skills. And, I am here to help you be brave and share them with the world.
I understand what it feels like to be a world that makes you feel like you don’t belong. Growing up as a Mexican American, I had the media and society tell me not only who I was but what it was like growing up me.
I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. I grew up in the west side and we later moved to the southside of San Antonio. Both my parents were immigrants from Mexico and fortunately for me they came to the United States in hopes to have a better life.
Growing up I was told being Mexican meant that I had a big family, supportive aunts, uncles, and a long list of cousins. While this may be true for some it was not for me. I was told growing up that I would most likely end up pregnant and in chanclas (flip flops); it would be a miracle if I just graduated from high school. As a quiet Latina (as expected) I was often overlooked and never taught how to speak up. I was expected to be grateful for what I was given and not to ask for more. And the list goes on, the expectations that society had for me that I had to overcome.
Fortunately for me, my parents instilled the importance of education. That education was my way out of society’s expectations for me. They did not know anything about high school, college, or how to help me develop in my career but they did teach some valuable skills that I still use today.
I had no idea what college meant nor did I even know how I would pay for it. I did what I could and I do not regret a single decision. For every roadblock, every turn I took, and path I took has led me to where I am today. I have had many opportunities and none of them were handed to me. I created each of them both good and bad.
Despite the challenges I encountered, I have learned critical skills that have assisted me in reaching my goals. My love is to share these skills with others and help them flourish in their own careers and lives. You can have the career and life you want, all you have to do is take the first step. Take ownership! No one can live your life but you. Like my mom use to tell me (and still does when I need to hear it) “Que no se te cerre el mundo” which loses translates to, don’t let your world close in on you, be open minded.
